Award Announced in June 2023, Broward County Sealed Corridor Project

(Federal Grant Amount: $15,440,000, Local Funding Amount: $3,860,000)

Project Objective: Increase safety at 21 grade crossings along Florida’s East Coast Rail Corridor

Corridor Details: Freight rail corridor shared with Brightline’s intercity passenger rail service

Collisions Data: 17% of collisions result from motorists driving around entrance gates, with nearly 60% in Broward County

Preventive Measures: Construct 33 new exit gates and 7 raised medians at high-collision crossings

Impact Areas: Target crossings with at least 27 collisions in the past five years

Funding Sources: Biden-Harris Administration (FRA Grant), Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization, Broward County, and six local municipalities

Expected Results: 

  • Enhanced safety at crossings with over 60 estimated daily train passages​

Community Benefit: 

  • Address safety concerns in a County projected to grow by nearly 2.2 million by 2045
