Closure Signed Team BMPO Web Banner

On March 16, 2020, the #BrowardMPO staff began working remotely to practice social distancing in order to stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. To address these unprecedented times, the MPO revised its Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) to incorporate a section on protocol for national health emergencies including pandemics. To incorporate this pivot in operations, the MPO continually uses resources such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, phone, email and social media to stay connected with the team, as well as its partners and the public.

One hurdle the MPO flawlessly overcame was the direction it needed to take to continue to hold public meetings. By utilizing Zoom Webinars, the MPO was successfully able to host the Local Coordinating Board for the Transportation Disadvantaged public meeting, the Citizens’ Advisory Committee meeting, and the Technical Advisory Committee meeting. As a result of going virtual, the meetings attracted more interest because it was easier to tune in. In fact, the MPO saw higher attendance numbers for all three meetings compared to meetings held in person.

Although the MPO PIO team isn’t able to meet with the public in a traditional manner, they have nonetheless still kept in communication with the public through weekly e-blasts, robust social media coverage and continual website updates. Follow the MPO on social media to join the conversation on transportation, urban design, how to make the best of working remote, and educational resources to break up the day.

Some of the benefits MPO staff have noticed while #workingremote are increased productivity, more time spent with family, and being able to exercise (even if just for a few minutes in between meetings) to name a few.

While the MPO staff dearly misses seeing friendly faces on a regular basis, staff understands the necessity of social distancing and staying home. We hope to return to the office soon and wish everybody safety and good health over the coming weeks.
