Federal Policy

A Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is a federally mandated transportation planning organizations comprised of representatives from local governments and transportation authorities. The MPO’s role is to develop and maintain the required transportation plans for a metropolitan area in order to ensure federal funds support local priorities. MPOs were introduced by the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1962, which required the formation of an MPO for any urbanized area (UZA) with a population greater than 50,000. Federal funding for transportation projects and programs are channeled through this planning process. Congress created MPOs in order to ensure that existing and future expenditures of governmental funds for transportation projects and programs are based on a planning process.

FAST Act

On December 4, 2015, President Obama signed the Fixing America's Surface Transportation Act (FAST Act) into law. The FAST Act is the first multi-year transportation bill passed by Congress in over a decade, and includes increases in funding for several programs vital to the Broward MPO and its mission. The FAST Act authorizes funding for five years, until 2020. This increased funding (in the form of both grants and formula funding) will allow the MPO to plan additional projects to help keep Broward moving.
