On October 22 and 23, 2019 Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) staff had the opportunity to bring thousands of students into the world of street planning at this year’s Construction Career Day at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds in Davie. Construction Career Day is an annual event hosted by our partners, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). This event exposes high school STEM students to the magnificent world of transportation and an array of career paths they can pursue within the field. This early exposure is a great way to keep the industry thriving.

This year, MPO staff members Hannah, Khyra, Charlene, Rebecca, Fazel, along with our partners set up an interactive learning lab, where students used StreetMix software to create their ideal version of a complete street. This opened up the conversation about our Complete Streets Initiative and the importance of building Better Streets for people who drive, bike, walk, and take transit. If you would like to see a few of the students’ streets, check out #BrowardMPO on Twitter and Instagram. Also, Construction Career Day attendees had the opportunity to meet a real-life cowboy, Ron Bergeron, who met with students, gave some encouraging words and took a few photos.
